Introduction
The Indian GST Council has announced revised GST rates that take effect on 22 September 2025. For businesses using ERPNext, staying compliant means updating your tax configuration before the deadline so every sales and purchase transaction reflects the latest rate.
Fortunately, ERPNext makes this easy. Whether you manage taxes through Item Tax Templates or the Sales/Purchase Taxes and Charges Templates, a few quick changes will keep your invoices accurate and your reports audit-ready.
How to Quickly Update GST Rates in ERPNext for Accurate Reporting in Tax Templates for Automatic Rate Changes
The most efficient way to handle a GST revision in ERPNext is to use Item Tax Templates. These templates attach tax rules directly to each item and allow you to specify a“Valid From” date.
Steps:

Go to Item → Item Tax Template.

Edit or create a template with the new GST rate (for example, 5%).

Set Valid From = 22-09-2025.

Link the template to the relevant items.
How it works:
ERPNext checks the posting date of every transaction. If the date is on or after 22 Sept 2025, the new rate applies automatically; older transactions keep the previous rate.
Example:
If an air-conditioning unit moves from 18% to 5% GST, just add a new template at 5% with the “Valid From” date. No need to touch individual invoices—ERPNext selects the correct rate based on the transaction date.
Benefit:
This approach is almost maintenance-free and future-proofs you for later GST revisions.
Update Sales & Purchase Taxes and Charges Templates
Not using Item Tax Templates?
You can still stay compliant by editing the Sales Taxes and Charges Template and Purchase Taxes and Charges Template.
Steps:

Navigate to Accounts → Sales Taxes and Charges Template(and likewise for Purchase).

Edit the relevant GST tax rows and replace the old rate (e.g., 18%) with the new one (e.g., 5%).

Save the template.
Every transaction that references these templates will now reflect the updated GST rate.
Benefit:
Gives you complete control over each tax category, though it requires a manual update whenever rates change.
